6. Construct a simple diagram to show how starches can be synthesized from simple sugars.
Simple carbohydrates (mono and disaccharides)
Complex carbohydrates (polysaccharides)
polysaccharides are formed through enzyme-catalyzed condensation (joining of two molecules with water being a by-product)
7. Identify some basic functions of carbohydrates in living things and give a specific example for each function.
Carbohydrates give the human body energy to move and sustain itself, for example you may eat a granola bar (filled with carbohydrates) before a soccer game to keep you full and energized during the game.
8. Construct a simple diagram to illustrate how two compounds can have the same empirical formula but have different structural ones.
Isomers are basically organic molecules with the same molecular formula, only arranged differently. Such as glucose, fructose, and galactose which have different structures but are all sugars.
9. Illustrate how a disaccharide can be decomposed into 2 monosaccharides.
Hydrolysis can decompose a disaccharide into 2 monosaccharides by adding water in the process.
