LG 4 Genetic Code questions

1. Describe the chemical, molecular structure of a nucleotide.

2. Discuss what is meant by the term, complementary base pairing.
Adenine bonds with Thymine in DNA and Uracil in RNA
Guanine bonds with Cytosine
These nitrogenous bases match up with each other in a nucleotide and are held together with hydrogen bonds.

3. Illustrate the general shape and construction of DNA molecule

4. Define what is meant by the term DNA replication.
A biological procedure that copies the genetic material and replicates itself. Without DNA, there would be no cell division and therefore no growth

5. Describe the action of the enzyme, DNA helicase, on the DNA molecule.
DNA helicase basically unzips the strands of DNA and enables it to copy itself into a new strand.

6. Detail the process by which DNA polymerase acts on the DNA molecule.
DNA polymerase is the enzyme that adds nucleotides onto DNA strands.

7. Explain the need for DNA ligase in the process of DNA replication.
Ligase is a specific enzyme that repairs single stranded DNA molecules (like a filling) repairing ends

8. Describe what is meant by the term, "Semi conservative replication"
(already posted on blog)

9.Discuss the reliability of DNA replication.
The accuracy of DNA replication is critical to cell reproduction, otherwise mutations may occur in the organism. Although cell replication is quite reliable.

10. Explain the relationship between DNA, chromatin and chromsomes.
Chromatin is packaged chromosomes, made up DNA which is the genetic information of life.
