Digestion LG 11 Questions

1. Identify the dietary nutrient requirements of the human digestive system.
 In order to function the human body required proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water.

2. Describe the location and mechanical processes in the human digestive system.

3. Discuss the roles performed by saliva.
Digestion begins in the mouth when saliva is secreted from the salivary glands and begins to break down the food that has been chewed by teeth. Once it's broken down by salivary amylase the small pieces of food are swalled and then further digested. 
4. Describe what happens during the swallowing reflex and identify why it is
important during the ingestion of food.
Swallowing is the process of passing food from the mouth to the pharynx and into the esophagus while shutting the epiglottis.

5. Define peristalsis and list the parts of the digestive tract where it occurs.

6. Describe the interactions of the four main secretions of the stomach.

Cardia where the contents of the esophagus empty into the stomach
Fundus formed by the upper curvature of the organ
Body or corpus the main, central region
Pylorus or antrum the lower section of the organ that facilitates emptying the contents into the small intestine

7. Relate the structure of the small intestine to the ability to perform its 2 main
functions.
  • Digestion of food
  • Absorption of food

8. Describe, in great detail, the digestive and other functions of the liver.
